The article said the “arriving class” was ranked second overall.

So I take that as talking about students who accepted. Not accepted students. Second overall is nothing to sneeze at, but I would’ve expected it to be first overall in terms of GPA and SATs. The holistic approach is exerting downward pressure on numbers. By comparison, UGA is getting more selective year over year by a large margin. SATS and GPAs are getting much better for each incoming class. Guess one’s outlook depends on what one believes is most important in making admissions decisions.
