Same thing happened to me and is why

I ended up at Tech (thank God - can I get an amen?). I wanted to go to JMU with the rest of my high school band for the marching band. They offered something like 120% of what they could fill as attrition normally takes care of the overage. My teacher said, “oh don’t worry, everyone on the waiting list gets in.” Well so many people accepted they had a crunch. Some people got disinvited, some had to defer, and a couple of my high school friends had to live in the hojo till the drop out rate freed up some rooms.
This is a pretty normal practice but it does bite them sometimes. Again, I’m thankful it did because thank God I’m a Hokie!
