Dude, the Zumwalt is pretty much dead. Everytime the DoD tries to be "cute"


it ends up being a cost overrun disaster. Source: I'm a DoD cost analyst.

They wanted to build a "stealth" ship, despite the fact that DBR (dual-band radar) blasts a huge amount of energy while on. So, you either have an air-search radar and illuminator, or you are stealthy. Pick one, but you can't have both.

There were so many issues with outfitting it with existing weapon systems because again it had to be stealthy, so they needed covers that reduced RCS, but also allowed sensors to work.

Then, they reduced the number of ships to 3, which caused even more overrun, due to reduction in learning curve savings on both the ships and the DBR.

Long story short, DDG-1000 isn't a replacement destroyer. It's a ship that will be brought out to look good at official events. It'll never be put into battle.

The DDG Flight 3 (with AMDR) and Flight 4 will be the replacement combatants in future warfare.
