Possible that some could have been saved from flu...but agree overall
When you look at the numbers, the risk is to those who to be honest are on borrowed time as a result of medical advances. I am not saying we should let them die or anything like that, but we have to acknowledge that this is in many ways the downside of the medical advances of the last 20 years. Many of those that have died would have succumbed to their underlying conditions just a few years ago and are going to be at more risk to anything.
From a statistical point of view, I continue to wonder if in places like NY, part of the reason for the drop in deaths is that a significant portion of the at risk population has been infected and either succumbed or survived through treatment.
Our public policy needs to focus on reducing the "preventable" deaths, those that can be saved through medical intervention. For everyone else that gets sick and gets over it, it is just being sick. Flattening the curve kept the hospitals from being overwhelmed, it's now time to get started on the recovery.
