Right, that's where I'm scratching my head.

I'm not even sure about "vast", but yes --- if you're old & underlying conditions, and you catch the flu, there is a reasonable chance you'll die.
However, that's *exactly* why older people get a high-dose flu shot. So they're *not* catching the flu in the first place, or they're catching a less-severe case of the flu. You don't have 120 old people in a Nursing Home, with zero protection from the flu.
It's almost like saying "The vast majority of people who don't wear their seat-belts in a 65mph crash are going to die anyways." Ok, but that's exactly why we have seat-belts!
Agree with the other point though. Seems as though some states have gone from "let's flatten the curve", to "let's prevent every possible COVID death."
