Biggest thing about Columbus...

Was that he was a brilliant navigator. He basically was the first guy to ever figure out the Atlantic trade winds and figure out how to use them. He hid that from potential investors and monarchs, because he didn't want them to steal his details and get somebody else to make the voyage on the cheap. That's why he got rejected so many times. Finally Ferdinand and Isabella said yes once they had finished the Reconquista and they finally had some money to spare.

It doesn't matter whether Columbus discovered America or not, or whether or not he thought he discovered China, or whether or not he ever set foot in North American. He was perhaps the most brilliant navigator in the history of world. EVER. If he's going to be honored, it should be for that.
