I think fordham's point is that we like to judge historical figures using

modern standards. Looking back and evaluating is fine. But to me the important lessons of history are why people did what they did within the context of their own society's experience, knowledge, and values...not within the context of our own experience, knowledge, and values.

The main things CC is being re-judged for today were widely considered legal, normal, and perhaps even reasonable by his own standards.
