Should be easy

If you only have one HD in the PC, most likely the BIOS will default to booting from that drive and you won't need to do anything. I did something similar recently and it worked just fine - OS was Windows 10, took a few reboots to get all the drivers up to date, but pretty easy. Older OS might be more problematic.

If for some reason it doesn't boot to that drive, you would need to go into the BIOS and set the boot order.

However - I'm assuming if 10 years old, your current HD is a traditional HDD. SSDs are cheap, and perform so much better, especially for boot/load times. I'd recommend purchasing a new SSD for your boot/programs and then put your old HD in as a secondary drive.
