This isn't about colleges not doing enough for students

It's about the NCAA having a stranglehold on those athletes ability to make money OUTSIDE of their competition. The fact that these guys cannot start their own YouTube channel and profit off of it is asinine (see link). I could make a name for myself within my major and start my own product line of materials to sell related to what I do. I might make a ton of money, I might only make a little, but it would be mine. If an athlete had the wherewithal to do that while in school, he/she would be faced with the choice of continuing on playing amateur athletics or dropping out of school. That's ridiculously stupid.

The NCAA is not gaining OR losing money off of this. They are simply self-righteous in saying that it won't be amateur athletics any more. It hasn't been amateur since they started putting it on TV and making money off the backs of others who they aren't paying. The NCAA is the bad guy here, not the colleges (who actually DO pay athletes through Cost of Attendence stipends on top of the countless amenities they get).

The hypocrisy of all this is the renaming of Michigan St's basketball team to add the Rocket Mortgage crap to the end. The school can take the money, Coach Izzo can take the money, the AD, assistant coaches, whomever already on AD payroll can take that money for the sponsorship. But the guys who actually compete and make a name for the school get nothing from that deal. Ludicrous.
