Over the course of his career, I'm gonna wager the ChemE was a bit more

profitable back then. You gotta think he only plays about 5-7 years in the NBA, which equates to, at most, $100k. I guarantee he made quite a bit more than that as a ChemE in a 30yr+ career. (Assuming he did ChemE for that long)

Nowadays, a base 1-yr NBA contract is worth more than what I'll make over the next 15 years and if you are drafted, you are making more in 1 year than I'll probably accrue in my lifetime from career salary.
