Like I have noted in other posts on other topics, I try to approach

a situation as objectively as possible which can be tough at times if I am vested emotionally in the subject matter. WRT my emotional vestment in VT, I will say I may be split in half on what I think is "best" for VT's future.

The "jock" in me has always wanted to see VT be a member of the SEC. Mainly because I subscribe to the philosophy that "if you want to be the best, then you have to beat the best" and the SEC is the "best conference" for football and a lot of the other non-revenue sports. Now that isn't to say that the other power conferences aren't good or the "best" in certain sports. I just believe the SEC may be the "best" overall conference right now and will probably eventually pass the Pac-8/10/12 as the "conference of champions."

Now the "scholar" in me asks "What role should athletics play on a college campus?" Is it so a school can participate in "big business" or is it supposed to be a secondary "fun" activity that is long overdue to be re-evaluated on its place within a campus? The scholar realizes there is no right or wrong answers because it all boils down to personal preferences. The scholar does believe that the schools may have lost their way (likely when SCOTUS ruled in favor of Oklahoma and Georgia in 1984) and allowed sports to grow into this uncontrollable "monster." Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed all the experiences that came with VT competing at the highest level. However, I do think my life would have turned out just fine if I had not experienced them. Having said that I could see a scenario where VT, for some odd reason, decides to place academics above athletics. If that is the case, then it could result in VT declining offers from either/both the Big Ten and SEC in order to remain in the ACC or some other spinoff conference (i.e. the MWC forming out of the WAC and AAC forming out of the Big East). Sometimes it is better to be a pike in a pond than a krill in the ocean.

Now the "athlete" would be disappointed if that is how things play out. However, it would learn to adapt and still enjoy the future experiences because cheering on the VT name doesn't change regardless of what NCAA or NAIA division level VT competes at. It wouldn't even matter if VT decided to join a pro league in a sport because the name would still be the same.
