and the motivations for what is being written. There were really three schools at the end. UVA, Kentucky and VT. Kentucky was mentioned with everybody at that time but, with Sam Bowie it was unlikely to get Sampson in a repeat of the twin towers scenario of Rick Robey and Mike Phillips. VT was in the mix and Charlie Moir had done a very good job but, ultimately it was not in the ACC. I don't know if it ever actually got to the point where Sampson said he was coming but, he was interested without a doubt. It was Uva and the helicopter ride with Ralph's House emblazoned atop UHall was a creative touch, however, ultimately it was the ACC and Ralph's belief that he would be allowed to do more than just play with his back to the basket that sealed the deal. That last part is also why UNC made an early exit from the race and was not realistically in the final three.
