Duke, UVA, UNC, GT, and Pitt are all AAU. Syracuse was AAU, but seems to not want to rejoin AAU. Notre Dame and BC aren't AAU, and because of the religious nature of the schools, they appear to not want membership even though both have the academic profile to be in it. Wake Forest is a private university that has the rankings to be in AAU, just not the research doctoral grads needed for AAU, that is probably the same for Miami.

Which leads us to VT, NCSU, FSU, Clemson, and Louisville. 4 of those are similar, and all 4 of those have made achieving AAU status as a goal. All 4 are close to AAU status, all are top 80 USNWR rankings, and all are on the short list for AAU membership. If the AAU does as they have in the past, they will extend membership to schools in an area where there are no other AAU schools first. So, that would probably mean Clemson 1st, FSU 2nd (only 1 AAU school in FL currently), VT 3rd (1AAU school in VA currently, and a smaller state than FL), and finally NCSU (2 AAU schools currently). The timeline is anyone's guess, but based on the AAU admitting schools at a rate of 1 every 4 years or so, those 4 should be AAU in 20-25 years.

Louisville should attain AAU status the day after a giant meteor strikes the Earth.
