Personality Disorders are considered more difficult to treat than Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, especially the Cluster B personality disorders such as Borderline, Narcissistic, and Anti-Social. The reason for this is.a personality disorder is "who you are." It's not like you have an over or under production of one of the neurotransmitters that go along with Bipolar and Schizophrenia, which often responds incredibly well to medication. Medication doesn't work for personality disorders because there isn't a neurotransmitter that is off balance, it is literally "who you are". Behavioral Therapy is the standard treatment for Cluster B personality disorders like Ant-social, Narcissistic, and Borderlines. The problem with ASPD and Narcissism? They are very comorbid and many people have both of them as a diagnosis and one of the major problems, you have someone that interally thinks they are fine and needs No help. So, it's a major battle just getting patients with ASPD and/or NPD to get into treatment in the first place, much less admit they have something wrong with them.
