Wasted money

Way back when, ESPN used to re-air the previous night's games during the morning and early afternoon when they didn't have any live sports programming or a tape delayed game. That is a lot cheaper than having "sports talk" programming during the middle of the day.

Yes, Fox/CBS/NBC are hiring these guys for their networks, but most of their networks seriously lack talent, and ESPN has/had it in spades.

Another thing is that instead of creating studio show for television only, the other networks are hiring the talent for radio shows and just putting a couple of cameras into the studio to give themselves a tv show as a bonus. NBC did it with Dan Patrick, Fox with Colin Cowherd, and ESPN itself does it with Mike and Mike.

It's why ESPNNews will probably be the channel that gets flipped. ESPN maintains that studio and those anchors to just show highlights. They have content that they need to monetize, and they spend money instead on a 24 hour highlight show.
