Agreed, but I think the pod system can help obviate that...
If everyone in your pod is in the same time zone, and the conference plays a rotating pod schedule where you cycle through the other three pods every three years (I don't know how the 8th game would be handled, if that's a permanent rival, etc.), then if each team plays the other pod 2 home and 2 away (and they switch the next time the pod comes around), then the schedulers can work to make sure that those two games in a far-flung time zone are separated by time in the season. This has the additional benefit of making sure you play every team in the conference at least twice in six years, which could actually increase conference cohesion over 7- or 8- team divisions....
