Texas almost joined the Pac 10 in 2010.
They were going to take 5 other Big 12 schools with them. Texas has long been infatuated with the Pac 12, especially the 4 California schools.
As for travel, it would be tough but so would trips to the ACC or Big 10. I don't buy the time zone thing. We are talking about 18-22 year old athletic men. TCU won 6 football championships as members of the WAC and MWC over a 12 year period with 2 different head coaches. TCU is in the Central Time zone. They had to travel to Hawaii, Fresno, San Jose, Las Vegas, and San Diego. It takes 2hours and 50 minutes to fly from Austin to LA. It takes just under 4 hours to fly from Austin to Seattle. If the football games on the west coast are played at 3:30pm or 7pm, we are talking about 5:30 and 9 pm Central time. That is no big deal. Basketball shouldn't matter either. If Texas plays Washington and WSU, they'll probably play on a Thursday night and Saturday afternoon. Those Texas players can rest up on the flight over there and on their way back to Austin. Penn State to Lincoln has to be one heck of a road trip too, but the Big 10 is okay with that. Notre Dame to Miami isn't a great road trip either but the ACC is okay with that too. Texas Tech would have the hardest time traveling west but it may be well worth it for them since it's much better than not being in a P-5 conference.
