I don't disagree that the schools do see themselves as being

equals. However, they may admit privately that certain schools do carry more weight in certain sports. Whether they want to admit it or not, I do believe at some level they want to make sure each is getting the most bang for their buck which means the ACC is getting the most bang for its buck too. One of the reasons the ACC placed FSU and Da U in opposite divisions is because at the time they were probably the top 2 name brand programs in the ACC (historically speaking). In addition to wanting an all-FL CCG. So at least in that regards the decision makers did care about "name brands." Clemson and VT were probably in that next group. However, it isn't clear whether they were placed in opposite divisions in part because of their name brand status or exclusively on other factors (i.e. protected cross-division pairings, a school's preference, rivalries (i.e. Textile Bowl), etc).
