8 Team Playoff: Here's what the schedule would look like.

Or at least what I think they should do. The ratings would be huge.

5 P5 Champs get automatic bid
3 At-large (decided by a committee)
An undefeated G5 team gets an automatic bid (if they scheduled at least 1 P5 team).
No more than 2 teams from one conference (and they should be bracketed away from one another where possible).
Rose Bowl must match up B1G and Pac12 champs.
Other P5 champs host Orange (ACC), Sugar (SEC) and Cotton (BXII), one of which is held New Year’s Eve.
Semi Final held nearly two weeks later (Peach and Fiesta). A separate committee pairs the teams, with heavy consideration paid to locations of the schools vis-a-vis Atlanta and Phoenix. But they are free to take into consideration TV ratings, best matchups, avoiding rematches, angles for the best possible finals matchup, and in general, whatever is in the best interests of college football. One game is Friday night, the other is Saturday early afternoon (before NFL playoff).
Final game (to the highest bidder) will be played the weekend before the Super Bowl.

Here is what it would look like this year if we use the last CFP rankings.

ORANGE BOWL Dec. 31. 7pm.
UCF vs. Clemson

COTTON BOWL Jan 1. Noon. EST
Alabama vs. Oklahoma

ROSE BOWL Jan 1. 4pm. EST
USC vs. Ohio State

SUGAR BOWL Jan 1, 8pm EST
Wisconsin vs. Georgia

(for the sake of discussion, let’s say the host teams won)

Semi Final:
FIESTA BOWL Friday, Jan 12, 8:30 pm EST
Oklahoma vs. Clemson

PEACH BOWL Saturday Jan 13 12:30 EST
Ohio State vs. Georgia

Title Game: Saturday, January 27, 7:30 pm EST

That would be fine with me. But it ruins the major bowls. -- Maroon Baboon 01/13/2018 2:59PM
