From a historical context, I wouldn't say it was a diatribe


on southern culture. The ACC was founded by 7 ex-Southern Conference members (Clemson, Duke, Maryland, UNC, NC State, South Carolina, and Wake) on June 14, 1953. Even though the conference called itself the Atlantic Coast Conference, the ACC started out as another Southern based conference. Even with the addition of UVA on December 4, 1953 didn't change the "culture" that was being formed at that time. Then when the ACC expanded in 1978 (GT) and 1991 (FSU) it didn't signal that the "culture" of the conference was shifting from a Southern base to an Atlantic base (or a true East Coast base).

One could argue that the ACC didn't try to shift the culture until the 2004/2005 and 2011 expansions. One could even argue that by that point the ACC's "culture" had already been established and that it would take time for people to accept the culture shift. It would be no different than if the Big Ten tried to shift from being a Midwest or North Conference to a Midwest Conference that stretches all the way down to the Gulf Coast. Likewise, the Pac 8/10/12 shifting from a West Coast Conference to a Midwest/West Conference.
