Lounge Advice: Dads with soccer-playing young teen daughters
And get your mind out of the gutter, some of you.
Our 13yo daughter has played for years on the highest level team for her age in the state, ranked nationally. I say this only because her coach is a serious coach and the club is very competitive.
Anyway, last week in practice, two teammates stepped on our daughter's left big toe and broke it. Doc said no activity for a week, but no cast. Just wearing an open boot.
Tomorrow, her team leaves for an out-of-state tournament. And her coach has been texting us every day since the injury, asking if our daughter is OK, and then whether she will play in the tournament. Once the coach heard what the injury was, her response was that she had had a broken toe in her playing days, and you can play on it, you just have to tape it up.
Our daughter, for her part, wants to go to the tournament but isn't sure how much she can play or how to handle her aggressive coach. And this is the first tournament where we are not going with our daughter. More of the girls are traveling as a team with the coach, with only a few parents, and so we won't be there if she goes.
So we see a doc this afternoon for a final verdict. If the doc says that no more damage will be done if our daughter plays, it's basically pain management, does she go? What if the pain is worse while at the tournament, or she hurts something else, or her arthritis (yep, 13yo with arthritis) becomes an issue and the coach rides her and we're not there? We know a few of the parents OK who are going, and could ask one to keep an eye on it, but that's an awkward position really for that parent. And our daughter says she can handle it, and then tears up and says she is worried about what her coach may say or that she might embarrass her in front of her teammates if our daughter decides it's too much. 13 is a tough age.
Any advice? The coach isn't an ogre, but she is very competitive and has been known to yell and sometimes say mean things to the girls. So we know that already. It's just we've always been around if something were to go south. BTW, our daughter has had 2 concussions, a broken toe on the other foot and a broken finger the past two years, in addition to overuse issues and her arthritis. So she is a tough kid.
