Well, it's a wiki link, so I'm sure it's not 100% correct. But we did try
hard to cover up the details of the incident for quite a while.
I'm not an expert on that incident, but I know that the US initially claimed that the flight wasn't in an established air route, but the August 19, 1988 report by Rear Adm. William Fogarty of U.S. Central Command did say that (from computer tapes found inside the ship’s combat information center) it was in an established air route and it was ascending.
