Their goal is not to confront us
Their goal is regional control and expansion of their form of government and their form of religious views (which have become intertwined with the government).
The whole region is both very complex yet very simple to understand. Iran has been around in one form or another for a very long time. But it was the British who started meddling in the region for the oil back before WW1. Then after WW1 the “country” of Iraq was created by the western powers and has been a mess ever since (at least 4-5 coups in less than 70 years). At the same time the US got more involved in the region and worked with the Brits to change the leadership in Iran. So all their talk about imperialism and meddling has a history going back to the 50’s and sometimes back to before the 1920’s.
Then factor in the Shia vs Sunni aspect and it adds another layer. Notice that Iran attacked bases in northern Iraq. That is the Sunni/Kurd part of the country. The Shia part of Iraq is mainly the south (and Iran is basically Shia).
Then look at how mad Iraq is at the US right now and the letter about troop withdrawal (but not really, is was a draft or a mistake or who knows). Iran has plenty of options to work with in the region.
Long story short, you are right that Iran does not want a military conflict. They were just forced to respond in this case. Either that or they used us to kill a strong and popular political opponent.
