Did they? Who knows
That last part was just rampant speculation that I tossed out there. But it is not that crazy of a possibility.
Hypothetically, he is the #2 guy in Iran, has strong military and proxy support, has strong public support, and has steadily grown his power and public visibility over recent years. That could be viewed as a political threat.
And hypothetically, if you wanted that threat gone, what better way than to get the US to do it for you. The US is happy because we get to take out a really bad guy. And Iran leaders get to remove competition, rally the country against and outside enemy, and distract from recent protests.
Looks like a win-win for both sides. Hypothetically of course.
