You are a Navy guy, so we are talking 35 years ago
I left the Naval spook space in 1990.
At the time, if memory serves, the ship to ship missiles where limited by electronic warfare.
The spook space got target information from land, air, and sea resources. This target information came with an ellipse target area and the tomahawks could be sent with the mission of hitting within that ellipse. My scenario was that they now had information that could send one that far, not that it was the reason. I suspect it was more to increase the range over the current restrictions of electronic warfare. If memory serves me right, we are talking a 100 miles or so. Thus, this would be used for maybe the 300 range.
Long time ago. I just know that when the capability was given, the Navy was very happy.
I just do what I was told to do and coded away.
