The COVID doesn't care if a social contact was "essential"" or not. All it cares about is the contact.

jman is saying that protests, as telegenic as they are, are completely dwarfed by all of the other social contacts made on a daily basis in non-protest situations ... even in a world of Social Distancing. In fact, there were a non-zero number of social interactions that didn't happen because there were people who might otherwise have been doing something in protest zones that stayed home instead. As many? Certainly not.

Yes. Large congregations of people are bad for disease transmission. 100%. No, the protests are not automatically sea-change interactions that are going to explode the COVID stats all by their lonesome.
