Mask use definitely slowed spread along with quicker testing.

In states hit early, the virus had already been spreading a while before it was known. Most of the early days were spent trying to provide care to the seriously ill, that were overwhelming the system and catching up testing for those with symptoms. It was very frustrating to have everything locked down with most people following guidelines, yet still see numbers doubling every 2-3 days - and that's only people who were showing symptoms.

When masks became mandatory, is when the numbers finally started to slow. The other factor that has made a big difference is quicker test processing and people with probable exposure getting tested. That allowed for early isolation.

Now businesses have protocols for exposure and access to testing. Hospitals have developed better treatment methods for dealing with COVID-19 patients.

Still, it is sad to say that currently, 20 people dying per day, is considered a good trend in the numbers. Also, people need to understand, when considering fatalities, they are often 6-8 weeks out from onset.

The number of people exposed overall, is still relatively low, so there will continue to be outbreaks, especially as more things open. Most of the initial cases were also in the larger cities. The spread to surrounding areas is slower. If the outbreaks are limited and quickly isolated, it should be manageable until a definitive treatment or vaccine is available.
