A couple of things. Just for reference, Vanguards 2020 fund, (for someone


retiring in 2020), the current mix is 48.98% stock, 49.49% bonds and 1.53% cash.

Instead of thinking about "retirement" as one big chunk, think about it in 5 or ten year increments. So may make sure your first 5 years is in a safe investment. The next 5 years is still 12 years away (5+7), so you can be more aggressive. Even the stock portion can be broken up, so that maybe a portion of it is in a high dividend yield fund that throw off 3% or more in dividends.
