Do you have a budget?

How much you spend every year, food, movies, trip to Bali Hi?

Disagree on the throwing every third down comment, one way to lose value is to have everything in cash, This country has a habit of f-ing over savers going back to the 70s. Take like...right now, printing lots of money, helicoptering to people, just screws people who assiduously scrimpt and saved. You need to keep value in stocks to keep up your value in capital otherwise you'll lose.

So, back to your budget, have enough available cash so you don't have to sell stocks during a crash, maintain. Surely that 30% that is not in equities will allow you live well for quite a while while leaving those equities alone to go up and down but generally up over the years.
