Don't call that misguided. If you are able to provide for you and yours
and have found a place that you respect and that respects you, then what more can you want? I loved my previous job, but in order to do it, I had to be in Mexico, which ended up not being a viable option. I haven't gone into too much detail as to why that is, but it was a combination of things. First, my wife and I no longer trusted the medical system in Mexico to keep us safe, especially with Covid. Along with that, part of my job involved visiting U.S. citizens incarcerated in Mexico prisons on a monthly basis. I was responsible for visiting all the citizens incarcerated in the state of Guanajuato, and to my knowledge, we had more people in prison than any other state. I generally felt safe doing this, but on one of the last visits before Covid put a pause on the in person visits, I was indirectly threatened during a visit. It spooked me enough that I reported it to my superiors and to the Regional Security Office at the Embassy. It sucks because I did truly love that job, but I don't know if I would have felt truly safe doing it anymore. Add to that the increased cartel violence in the state I was in, and it just wasn't worth it anymore. Any time anyone asks me about whether or not they should retire to Mexico, I will always say: life and prosperity in the U.S. will always be leaps and bounds more secure than life in Mexico. Rent an Air BNB for the winter months if you want, but keep a place close to family in the U.S. You'll want somewhere to get back to with the shirt hits the fan... and it will.
