I wonder if this gets thrown out there...

Everyone keeps 12 games, but the regular season becomes 11 games. However, when the conference championships are happening, the other teams in the conference play one another based on how they ended up. If there are divisions in the conference, then #2 plays #2. If not, #3 in the conference plays #4. This wouldn't be set in stone and things would get moved around to avoid rematches if they so desire.
