Something to keep in mind is if you eliminate the divisions
then you also eliminate the possibility of the ACC hosting a conference championship game in football per the current NCAA bylaws.
17.11.6.2 Annual Exemptions. [FBS/FCS]
(b) Conference Championship Game. One conference championship game:
(1) Between division champions of a conference that is divided into two divisions (as equally balanced in number as possible) and conducts round-robin, regular-season competition in each division; or
(2) Between the top two teams in the conference standings following full round-robin regular-season competition among all members of the conference.
Once the ACC eliminates the divisions, then Option 2 is the only option for the ACC to continue hosting its conference championship game. I am not sure the ACC, its members, or even ESPN would be willing to give up the money earned from the game and an opportunity to for 2 top ranked teams to play 1 more game to improve their Playoffs/NYD6 chances to implement "an improvement over what the ACC does now." Plus, I don't think the ACC will gain enough support from the other 9 FBS conferences to amendment the bylaws because the Big Ten (and others) will see it as the ACC trying to give Notre Dame a backdoor entrance to the conference championship game without being a football member and playing a full conference schedule.
