If the ACC is trying to find a dance partner for Wake football
then shouldn't the ACC also do it for Duke football too? Yes, it is probably a mistake for the ACC to have 4 NC schools. However, I would think having 3 NC schools is a bigger mistake because it would mean 1 NC doesn't have a dance partner in terms of protected cross-division games.
Even if the ACC opts to go with rotating pods/quads, I would think the protected cross-division game would still be used to maximize the number of rivalries that can continue as annual games. If Wake football ends up in another conference, then who will be Duke's dance partner? It won't be UNC because UNC will either be in the same pod/quad/division and paired up with either UVA or NC State. At least by having an even number of NC schools it makes it easier to figure out who goes in which pod/quad or to have a balanced number of teams in each division (if the ACC remains at 14).
