British PM Lord Palmerston from 1848:
"We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow."
Well, that's Notre Dame.
The ACC relationship advanced their interests in conference membership for non-football sports as the Big East once did. The ACC relationship also came in handy in the Covid Season. And today, the SEC serves ND's interests in expanding the at-large opportunities for the CFP to the point that they'll never have to worry about a 4 superconference champions-only playoff proposal that would crush their football independence ever again. TBH, I don't think ND has anything to worry about with the status quo. But the change the SEC wants would be make it so much more permanent.
My point is, I don't think ND is in permanent cahoots with the SEC. In fact, they have academic and competitive interests in common with the PAC, B1G and ACC. And ND will work with whomever they will to advance their goals.
Other points:
1. The cost of Clemson and FSU leaving the ACC right now are far greater to themselves than the cost it was to Miami, Syracuse and BC for not signing on for more years in the Big East.
2. Finebaum and Staples are either agitators or ignorant. They should know better than just to say Clemson and FSU should call the SEC without further details about the other members of the ACC. It's just lousy journalism. And as you mentioned, they aren't independent and unbias voices.
