There are several ways to move forward without killing the ACC
But what the ACC becomes will likely be different than it is now. And it all ties to what the P5 schools push forward with the NCAA.
There is money associated with the conference names and that is hard to toss away such established branding. It’s why UNC still uses the Jordan logo all the time even though his last college game was 38 years ago. The ACC has some brand power that will not be easily tossed aside.
But it really comes down to the fact that football has very different concerns compared to all other sports. There is more money, fewer games, and less concerns about travel. I would argue that football should have a pod structure just like the NFL. That would allow more scheduling flexibility and provides a way for ND to stay independent. And all other sports stay with their conferences.
And have two levels, P5 and G5 so that each one can have a national champion. This would leave FCS with a national champ. Then two levels of FBS, each with media contracts and a national champ. No need to overcomplicate this when we have a successful NFL model to use as a blueprint.
