I know that Notre Dame will never join the ACC in football.
Which could make things interesting to see what Notre Dame does if the power conferences do end up forming their own division level for all sports. Will Notre Dame join this new division level even if it means being forced to join an existing conference in football or will Notre Dame opt to join the new DII (aka the remaining old DI schools including the G5 and DI-FCS conferences and the top DII schools/conferences) in order to maintain its independence in football? If Notre Dame is forced to give up its football independence, then does it join the ACC or another conference because the ACC is no longer considered a power conference. Given that it is "just business," I personally disliked the idea of the ACC throwing Notre Dame a lifeline in 2020 for football because I suspected it wouldn't change Notre Dame's position on the issue. Then again, I was never fond of the ACC agreeing to this special arrangement with Notre Dame in the first place because it made the ACC look weak, maybe even the weakest power conference, for having a partial member in the 2 most important collegiate sports (aka the 2 revenue sports).
What I was more curious to know is whether Notre Dame would potentially sacrifice the health of its other 24 sports in order to preserve its independence in football or not. I don't think Option C is really an option though in this scenario because the consequences would be the same as 1 of the 2 existing options. Also, I don't see where the status quo will be able to continue because I am not sure Clemson and Florida State will be able to afford to wait until the current GOR expires before they leave the ACC for another conference.
