I have no trouble calling it unethical. Legal precedent isn't the issue.

There are thousands of unethical, deceitful, immoral things people can do that are perfectly legal and Swoff and UNC may have done lots of them. But legal precedent (how a law has been applied) isn't the issue, it's that there isn't a law that applies.

I gave you a scenario below that would be a legal issue...the IRS thing.

You and I could have given money to Isaiah Ford to stay in school last year and neither of us would have violated a law. Giving money to someone is perfectly legit. If caught by the school or NCAA, Ford could be declared ineligible to play. But he could still keep the money and turn around and enter the draft anyway.

But if we had given the money to his church and the church had given the money to Ford or his family for phony reasons, the IRS could easily step in to see if it was legit or just a money laundering exercise so we could declare the payment to Ford as a charitable contribution.

I've mentioned this twice now because I think it happens all the time. It is by far the easiest and most difficult to track means of getting money to kids from low income backgrounds.
