Money is always an issue around here (or so it seems), but I don't think it ever came to that point. Keep in mind I just turned 50 so I don't speak from any point of knowledge since I was just a snot nosed punk at the time.
I would guess that it was never a real discussion. We had our long time conference (Yankee), our local rivals like New Hampshire, Maine, etc and football really wasn't that big of a deal except when we played in-state rival Yale. In my years on campus I never saw 1 football game, though I went tailgating to 2 Yale/UConn games. It was until Lew Perkins was hired as AD in 1990 that someone had the idea that big time football was going to be very important. I can't imagine even Lew knew how important at that point.
