The most important way to prevent it is to fly in "balanced" flight. "Step on the dang ball!"

As for flying in a manner to overstress it, that probably didn't happen until it impacted the ground.

I still think he was trying to "get around" flying IFR, and was trying to either get under, or stay under the crud layer (which was the ceiling). The only time anyone should attempt to fly Special VFR is if there is a ceiling, but 3+ miles of visibility under the clouds. If the weather starts to close in, immediately ask the ATC to switch you to a IFR flight plan/flight following, with a precision approach to the destination.
