The problem with the weather is that it was there when he took off


IMHO, he tried to "skirt" the ceiling, trying to reach his destination below the scud layer. But when he checked into Van Nuys airspace, he was above the ceiling.

My guess is that he was in and out of the clouds, probably still flying above the layer the majority of time. He may have seen a hole, and tried to dive through that to get back underneath the ceiling and flew it into the ground. Or he had already gotten below the layer, then flew into solid IFR weather, resulting in him flying it into the ground trying to get out of it on the bottom (like he had been doing on this flight.

Either way, this was irresponsible IMHO. He's carrying passengers, and trying to do this crap? He should have played it safe and filed a IFR flight plan.
