Had a coworker with a similar issue years ago

They said he didn't pay. He had the cancelled check. Should be straightforward.

But once something incorrect goes in the IRS computer, it becomes the truth regardless of any evidence you have to the contrary.

Took him 9 months to get it cleared up.
