I would disagree with that statement. Your son probably made good friends through the swimming program. He learned that hard work can lead to success, and how to deal with both success and failure. All good life lessons.
All that he is losing is muscle memory to compete at his previous level. And who knows, maybe the fire will re-ignite in several years.
