If he's finding other productive ways to occupy his time

through other extra curriculars or work, isn't growing up about making decisions ultimately?

I did the same thing when I quit baseball. I was good but we had high round draft picks on our high school team and I was never going to start over them. I picked up other activities at school instead. I don't regret it for a second. Got my engineering degree at VT and the rest is history.

I definitely kept myself just as busy without baseball as I had been with it.
