The purpose of sports for kids for 99.9% of them is to teach those life lessons, not prepare them to go pro or even to get a scholarship. Once you convince yourself of that, you'll see that those years weren't wasted, and you can help him see that too. Then he can apply those lessons to things he is interested in or good at and will go even further with those.
