The ND statements amounted to.

"If one holds a gun to our head and is going to shoot us in the face, we may turn over our wallet."

That is much different than

"I like this guy so much that I would like to donate some money to him."

ND has said that only if zero playoff access happens and recruiting is dead, ND may be forced to join a conference.

It also has said that if NBC drops it and it has no TV access, it would consider joining a conference.

That is not the same as saying that ND will willingly join a conference because it wants to.

You have seriously misread the position, resolve and history of football independence and what it means to ND.

I seriously doubt that anyone in authority, from John Swofford down to the assistant AD's at ACC schools, thought those statements meant that ND would willingly join the ACC in football.

Every John Swofford public statement was to the effect of "We would love ND to join but know that they cherish their independence" or some such statement.

Jim Phillips has repeatedly said as much as well, lately.
