Big company rant for today: RIFs, Severances and Notifications to employees


So I work for a UK based company and their labor laws, if you didn't already know, are VERY different over there. They can't just walk in on a Friday and say "sorry, we've eliminated your position." They have to be "made redundant" and it takes months to get them out of the door from there.

We're going through a RIF now and a handful of folks in the US are affected along with a few dozen in the UK. They notified them last week that their job was coming to an end but didn't give them any clue as to when that would be. In reality, it'll be whenever all the UK folks are finally gone, probably in about two months.

So my buddy, who's been here 19 years, has been told he's getting fired sometime between now and April 1. If he leaves on his own before that time, he doesn't get the severance package he's owed, which is somewhere around $25k, so he has a decision to make.
