Guess my beef is this is the company's way out of giving up $25k


since he'll probably leave proactively. They're acting like nice guys saying "we're giving you a heads up since you've been here 20 years" but they're not giving him ANY indication of time frame. So when he goes out on interviews, he has no clue when he can start. He's either got to forego the severance or have incredibly lucky timing.

As far as taking PTO, probably makes more sense to get it paid out when he's laid off rather than taking it (even though it's taxed at a higher rate).
