It isn't odd when you consider what rivalries the SEC considers to be


"important." I can tell you the ONLY reason the SEC started out with 2 protected cross-division games and later dropped it down to only 1 protected cross-division game is because there are only 2 cross-division rivalries that the SEC considers to be sacred; Alabama-Tenn and Auburn-Georgia (aka the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry). Hence why I came up with the 2 permanent divisions model. Now that the SEC has 16 members, Alabama can become a division foe for Tenn and Auburn can become a division foe for Georgia which would allow the SEC to eliminate the protected cross-division game from its scheduling model and go with 1 or 2 rotating cross-division games.
