I get it
But it is being used as a cover up for buying recruits. Buying recruits was never intended. When good things get taken advantage of, regulation follows. When a high school recruit makes a marketing deal bigger than an all star professional, something is fishy about the motive. I have no idea how to regulate it, but you can bet there are a lot of people interested in figuring it out. All these years, the NCAA has been bad mouthed for not allowing athletes any freedom to earn a buck because they knew that it was impossible to regulate half way. Now here we are.
I do think we will still see some of the outlier numbers level out in years to come. When a booster loses millions to a kid that gets expelled from school, the reality will set in to some degree.
Bidding wars for proven talent in the portal could get interesting.
I am not against NIL. I think what Will is doing for Mutts is fantastic. I do worry about the suddenness of all the changes. But, it will settle into a new normal. Right now, I hate that it is at the forefront of every conversation and a lot of the rumors are really just self serving exaggerations.
Final thought on the subject, this has to be a major distraction in the lives of kids that already have a very full schedule. What gives first?
