I wasn't assuming that 1 game would decide UConn's fate
Heck I wasn't even assuming that 2 games (UConn plays Syracuse at home this week) would decide UConn's fate. Given the environment of the ACC when it decided to add Louisville, I am not sure the ACC is completely out of the woods yet. At least to the point where the ACC could add anyone in the next 5-10 years and everyone sit around the camp fire singing Kumbaya. I do think if the ACC decides to expand within that timeframe, then you will see the football schools push hard to add 1-2 more football schools. Now whether that push comes from the ADs, Presidents, or both may be up for debate.
The football schools may have less bite to their bark since they are locked into the GoR. However, if the ACC decides to add 2 basketball schools or 1 of each, then a lot of people may start to see eerie similarities with the Big East. What is unclear is if the ACC starts to ignore the wishes of the football schools too much, then what kind of impact could that have on the conference when it comes time to renew the GoR. I would think that if a football school has built up resentment because of decisions made by the conference under this current GoR, then they may be less willing to agree to another long-term deal. If they feel that bridges can't be rebuilt, then they may decide to leave the conference. Once 1 football member decides to leave the conference, then it is unclear whether that will create a domino effect or not.
If the ACC is truly serious about possibly adding UConn, then I would think the basketball schools would need the football schools on board with the decision. Even though the Presidents are making the decisions, they still have to answer to their Board of Trustees and maybe their fanbases (to a degree). If FSU's BoT and their fanbase want to see the ACC to continue improving its football image, then it may be difficult for John Thrasher to vote for a "basketball school" even though he believes that school is a great academic fit for the conference. By UConn playing more home-home series with ACC schools (football and basketball) and UConn shows a consistent high attendance regardless of the opponent, then it should put anyone's reservations about the school at ease.
